=================NEW COURSES WILL BE ADDED AS REQUESTED==================
Hello again,
The 6 week course will cover all basic everyday signs enabling you to communicate effectively with deaf people as well as those who are non verbal and have a disability. We will also introduce you to Makaton Key Word Signing as part of the course and explain the difference. Effectively KWS uses Auslan signs so if you are in the disability field this course will also be helpful for you in adding to your resume.
Past students have included people from the following workplaces:
- Primary and secondary schools
- Specialist schools
- Disability organisations
- Department Of Human Services
- Employment services
- Emergency services
- Medical services including hospitals
- Drama students
- Occupational therapy students
- Disability studies students
- Speech therapists
- Audiologists
Over 70% of all our students are professional people wanting to learn Auslan due to working with Deaf / Hard of Hearing and non verbal children and adults. 20% are TAFE and University students wanting to learn Auslan because it will be useful in their chosen professional field once their studies are completed. 10% are people wanting to learn a new language or have family and friends who are deaf.
Auslan is more than just a language. It is non verbal and visual and in our courses we have a lot of pair and group work so you can practice sentences and activities with the signs you have been taught and learnt.
Within the first class you will be able to ask the following questions in Auslan:
- What is your name
- Where do you live
- When is your birthday
- Where were you born
- Do you have children
- How many
- What are their names
- Where do you work
- What do you do
- What sport do you like playing
- What books do you like reading
You will be able to sign and respond effectively to the above questions at the end of the first class.
From thereon we continue building your vocabulary so you are constantly learning new signs in a range of categories such as:
- SocialAnd the list goes on. All signs that are useful and that can be used everyday.
- Family
- Instructions
- Sports
- Emotions
- Food and drink
- Everyday common signs
- Colors and animals
- Australian State and countries
- Positive and negative signs
Additionally we’ll introduce you to deaf technology (how do we communicate on the phone to hearing people) and we’ll keep you informed of what is happening in the Deaf community such as volunteering opportunities, sporting events, deaf clubs and the Australian Deaf Games in Geelong (January 2012) in which, because you can sign, you could be a volunteer and use your signing skills volunteering and meeting deaf people socially at various pubs and clubs throughout the games.
The Deaf community is a great and vibrant community that we are all proud to be a part of. My teachers and l would love to introduce you to this world where you can use Auslan as part of your everyday life in work, socially, with friends or just as an interest because really, there is no other non verbal language like this in Australia. It is unique.
We are all passionate about teaching Auslan and creating awareness about deafness and we look forward to welcoming you to our world through our Auslan courses.
Enrolments close on Wednesday 8th February. Enrolling is easy – go to my website and click on the red ENROL button at top right of homepage, fill in your details and submit.
Thank you for your time in reading this letter and for your interest.
Warm regards,
Darren Roberts

WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF LEARNING AUSLAN?
Do you think it is all about a deaf teacher teaching you one sign after another and you simply copying them and hoping to remember the signs? Are you afraid you may not be able to understand the deaf teacher?
The thing about Auslan is that everyone starts at the same level - there is no history of failure. Auslan is not about academics; its about being able to express yourself through a visual communication. And in our courses people truely enjoy learning Auslan.
OUR AUSLAN COURSES ARE DIFFERENT!!
Today, Auslan classes are about interaction. Its about you putting into practice what the teacher teaches you and we do this by constantly teaching a page of signs and then working in pairs or groups to practice sentences using correct Auslan grammar. Thus you are ALWAYS learning new signs.
As we have seen in week 2 students, already they can easily have a 30 minute conversation about their families, where they live, their names, age, their favorite books, movies, dvd's, restaurants, the sports they play - not just shallow conversations but in depth. WOULDN'T YOU LOVE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT TOO?
The teacher uses a whiteboard to communicate difficult explanations but you all have a workbook, the same as the course teachers, so you can always understand what they want to get across. And, after the first session you will ALWAYS be able to communicate with your teacher using fingerspelling, signs or giving visual clues.
SO COME ON; JOIN A CLASS, HAVE FUN AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS
